West Coast Eagles V Essendon, Round 19 2008

The passion and dedication I have for the eagles grew beyond the greatest of levels, when they defeated a fired up Essendon on the 10th of August, 2008 (Round 19). West Coast had beaten a dangerous team that was Saint Kilda two weeks previous to this match, providing me with a boom of confidence in the young eagles’ players that had been contributing so much since day one of 2008. Brad Ebert had earnt a rising star nomination for his fantastic performance, one that will never be forgotten in my eyes. The mood I felt whenever he reached the ball was amazing, as every time he added another disposal to his name something spectacular happened. Round 19 was the time for another young star to be recognised by every man and every woman that live, breathe and are highly dedicated to our great sport. Ben McKinley, the young man from Victoria. A young forward that had been slowly developing in every match he played and this match was the one where his talent, passion and enjoyment were recognised, the match where he became a star.

The eagles began the game with confidence, with premiership defender Adam Selwood kicking a fantastic major in the first 18 seconds. From then on it was all the eagles. Every eagle out there was fighting hard, contributing and putting their bodies on the line for every contest. But the highlight was McKinley’s unpredictable and yet exciting kick from the boundary line, bouncing strait through the middle for another major. This goal was a mark of how far the young players at West Coast have come and that they are dangerous men, regardless of how many games they have played or how young they are. At the main break the eagles were 38 points up. The third quarter saw a comeback by the bombers, with Angus Monfries slotting his first goal of the match and Matthew Lloyd taking amazing marks and living up to the reputation he possesses. He gave the black and red a reason to think positively, by not giving up without a fight. The fourth quarter saw one of the most fantastic goals of the 2008 season; Quinten Lynch let his powerful right foot fly and scored a telling goal from about 60m out. Mckinley slotted his 6th goal from the impossible angle and again capitalised just minutes later. The eagles had won the match by 10 points.

I was watching this game with about 5 of my cousins, we all screamed whenever an eagle gathered the ball because we simply knew it was going to evolve into a goal and we would be able to scream louder for the team that we love so much.

A fantastic day for eagles fans, particularly myself. To be able to see the hard work the eagles have put into maintaining and helping the younger players to become stars had really payed off. It was a game full of emotion, intensity and agility, one of the many reasons why it was so fantastic.

It gave me an insight into the future of the eagles, the great young players now who will evolve into superstars of the AFL.
